STEM Week March 2018

STEM Week; March 2018

We had an amazing STEM week (well it turned out to be almost STEM month when the snow delayed things). We had lots of visitors and a focus on Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths across the school.

Scientists from Edinburgh University came to teach us about DNA - we extracted DNA from peas and found out how geneticists work to help people with conditions like Cystic Fibrosis. It was fascinating and we loved it.

The nursery children got involved too. They explored the puddle on the yard with boats (and wellies of course)

The Reception children investigated boats for a gingerbread man. If the boat floated they got to eat their biscuit, always an incentive!

Y4 found out about solar energy when Mr Craig brought some panels in.

Y3 really enjoyed their visit from Mr Cooper who talked to them about the work of opticians. They learned about the inside of the eye and the little veins in them. They wore 3D glasses and it looked like there was a real wasp on the table.

"We had an egg and we had to find a way to transport it from the table to the ground. We worked together and luckily nobody smashed the egg, we tried zip-wiring it."

Elizabeth Devon came in and worked with every class - she knows everything about rocks, soils and fossils!
